Summer in the hall, without air-conditioning the building.

A metal roof, machines that heat, loading bays that stay open: in a production hall or a warehouse the heat does not come from outside alone. An evaporative air cooler blows cooled fresh air where people work, with the doors still open.

What the law asks

An indoor climate that does no harm

Ordinance 3 to the Swiss Labour Act (art. 16) requires premises to be adequately ventilated, naturally or mechanically, and an indoor climate that does not harm health. The SECO commentary puts the useful range at 20.5 to 26.5 °C depending on the outside temperature.

Why not air conditioning

It recycles the air; the heat stays

Air conditioning recirculates indoor air: it loses its effect as soon as the doors open and the machines make their own heat. For a 1,000 m² hall the manufacturer counts 11 kW installed against 108 kW for air conditioning.

What we install

On the roof, on the façade or on castors

A fixed roof unit with ducts for the whole hall, from 20,000 to 60,000 m³/h; or mobile units placed at the workstations, on a 230 V socket. The air blown in has to get out again: the survey checks the openings.

The SECO commentary on art. 16 of Ordinance 3 also holds that work above 28 °C is deemed hazardous for pregnant women and calls for an assessment by a qualified person. That point is often what decides an installation.

Common questions

Does it work with the doors open?

Yes — in fact it is the condition. The unit blows in fresh air and puts the hall under slight positive pressure, so the air already there leaves through the doors and openings. What does not work is the opposite: a closed space with nowhere for the air to go.

What electrical supply is needed?

0.6 to 1.1 kW for a mobile unit on a single-phase 230 V socket; 1.1 to 15.5 kW for a fixed unit, on 230 or 400 V depending on its size. The current for each model is listed on the units page.

Does it need a water connection?

Not for a mobile unit: its tank holds 130 to 300 litres depending on the model, and it can also be fed continuously. A fixed unit does need a plumbed water supply. This is recorded during the survey.
